moation
/ˈmoʊtʃən/ · noun · moat + motion
The ability to turn one temporary competitive advantage into the next before the first is competed away. A moat is a position. Moation is a process. It means continuously using today's transient edge in capital, talent, compute, data, distribution, or technology to create tomorrow's.
Coined by Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross on 30 August 2026, in this post: "In the Singularity, there may be no permanent moats. Only moation." This site is an independent record of the word and the behaviour, not affiliated with him, though we have mad love and respect for him.
Exhibits
Named instances of the behaviour, by companies, people and agents. The word is new. The move is not.
The Lock-In Ladder
NVIDIA company 2006-present
compute → technology
A raw GPU performance lead was always going to be matched. NVIDIA spent it building CUDA, so that by the time competitors caught up on silicon the entire research world wrote code that only ran on NVIDIA. The perishable edge bought a durable one, which is now itself being spent on networking and systems.

The Overhead Flip
Amazon company 2002-2006
technology → distribution
Infrastructure built as a cost centre for retail got turned outward and sold to everyone else. The classic move of converting an internal capability into external distribution before someone else commoditises it.
source
The Attention Conversion
OpenAI company 2020-2023
technology → capital
A model quality lead measured in months was converted into a consumer land grab, the user numbers into capital, and the capital into compute. Each edge was spent before it eroded. Textbook moation, run at a cadence nobody had attempted before.

The Data Flywheel
Google company 1998-present
technology → data
PageRank was publishable and therefore copyable. What was not copyable was the query log it produced once enough people used it. The algorithm bought the data, and the data outlived the algorithm.

The Silicon Turn
Apple company 2008-2020
distribution → compute
iPhone volume was the edge. Apple spent it buying P.A. Semi and funding a decade of in-house chip design, converting unit distribution into a compute advantage the rest of the phone industry cannot buy off the shelf.

The Node Treadmill
TSMC company 1987-present
capital → technology
Fab capex buys a process node lead, the node lead wins the customers whose prepayments fund the next node. The edge is never held, only rolled forward. Stop rolling for one generation and the whole position collapses.

The Developer Beachhead
Stripe company 2010-present
technology → distribution
A seven-line integration was a temporary developer-experience edge in a market where everyone eventually ships a decent SDK. Stripe spent it acquiring the startups that later became enterprises, converting DX into distribution before the DX gap closed.

The Fleet Turn
Tesla company 2014-present
distribution → data
An early EV lead was going to be competed away by every incumbent automaker at once. The cars already sold were converted into a fleet-miles data asset that the incumbents could not retroactively acquire.
source
The Pipe-to-Catalog Turn
Netflix company 2007-2013
distribution → technology
Netflix converted a DVD-by-mail subscriber list into a streaming subscriber list, then converted streaming distribution into original content, each time moving one step ahead of the licensors who were about to reprice its supply. Two conversions in six years.
source
The Capital Carry
Elon Musk person 1999-present
capital → capital
The individual-level version: one liquidity event funds the next venture before the first company's relevance decays. The edge being rolled is not a product position at all, it is the proceeds and the credibility that came with them.

The Usage Loop
Coding agents agent 2023-present
technology → data
Model quality wins developer adoption, adoption produces accept and reject signal on real code in real repositories, and that signal trains the next model. A frontier lead measured in weeks gets converted into a preference dataset nobody without the users can assemble.
source
The Talent Turn
Bell Labs company 1925-1984
capital → talent
A regulated monopoly's excess profits were converted into the densest concentration of research talent in industrial history, which produced the transistor, information theory and Unix. The monopoly was temporary. The intellectual output outlived it by decades.

Uses of the word
Every recorded use of "moation" in the wild, newest first. Collected hourly. Matched strictly, because "moation" is one letter from "motion" and search APIs will confidently hand you thousands of the wrong thing.
No uses of the word have been recorded outside X yet. That is expected, and it is the point: collection started on day 1, so whatever happens next is on the record from the beginning. Checked hourly across Hacker News, Bluesky, Reddit, Google News, GitHub and Mastodon.
